Patrick Shafer, Martin Gibbs and Don March helped contain the fire near Naramata on Sunday morning. UPDATE: 1:30 p.m Three fast men spent several hours Sunday morning working to contain a small fire near Naramata. In a post on the Naramata Party Facebook page on Sunday, Patrick Schaffer said Martin Gibbs, Don March and himself were in the area collecting firewood about 6 a.m. when they first noticed smoke over the KVR Trail . Gibbs reported the fire to the BC Fire Service and the three men headed for the smoke. They discovered a burned out minivan and a fire that had spread to nearby trees. “We contained the fire by digging a perimeter and extinguishing the hot spots as best we could,” Schaffer wrote. “Luckily the dam was nearby so we could refill the 5 gallon jerry can we had with us.” Shafer said BCWS crews arrived at the scene about 10 a.m. and took the three men into custody. As of noon Sunday, BCWS has classified the fire as “under control” and firefighters remain on scene looking for hot spots. Schaffer, Gibbs and March have been praised online for their hard work. “Thank you so much, this is so huge,” one woman responded to the Facebook post. “Has anyone bought you beer or anything?” “Homeland heroes!” wrote another. The small fire is believed to be human-caused, although fire marshal Aydan Coray did not know what caused the fire. After a helicopter bucketed the blaze earlier Sunday, firefighters spent the morning trying to bring the blaze under control. The fire is not expected to spread further. “Crews have set up hand guards and are beginning to patrol for any remaining hot spots within the perimeter,” Coray said.
