Prime Minister Andrew Furey, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Stephenville on Tuesday. There has been a lot of talk about hydrogen lately, but what exactly is it, how is it produced and how is it used? Premier Andrew Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador is well-suited to producing hydrogen, a water-based fuel that requires a lot of electricity to produce. That’s where wind farms come in. The proposed wind farms will generate the energy needed to produce hydrogen. “You take water, which we have in abundance,” says Furey, “you put it through an electrolyzer and you create hydrogen.” Instead of producing Co2 that contributes to accelerating climate change, the hydrogen that can be used to fuel cars, trucks and ships actually emits water. Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador’s location on the northeast coast of North America is also beneficial for hydrogen production and distribution. The prime minister says the province is rich with wind, water, deep-water ports and an adaptable workforce.
