Monday/Tuesday: Multiple storm risk days in Ontario, temperatures rise
Storms will be around northwestern Ontario on Monday, but the situation won’t be unique to the region. A thunderstorm risk extends across the province with southern Ontario bearing the brunt of the chance, including a large severe chance. Thunderstorms may begin to break out in the early afternoon. “That heat and moisture blowing up ahead of a cold front will naturally make the atmosphere unstable, so we’re watching for the risk of stronger storms sweeping through the area late Monday afternoon,” said Tyler Hamilton, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. The storms will likely take on heavy line characteristics, so we should watch for some stronger winds associated with the storms, he added. In addition to winds, strong storms can also bring heavy rain and small hail. Monday will see the thermometer rise with widespread temperatures near or in the 30s across southern Ontario. With the humidex, it will feel close to 40 for many locations, including the greater Toronto area, ensuring that the warm month will not be forgotten or lost. The cold front will break those high temperatures as it finishes its tour of the province on Tuesday with a stop in eastern Ontario before moving on to southern Quebec. These areas will endure another day of storms with potentially severe thunderstorms. Windy and rainy conditions will call the day as August draws to a close.
Look ahead: Cooler start to September, but warm-up for Labor Day weekend
If you found August hot, you weren’t the only one. Looking back at the month, only one day was below average, with 21 days of the month being above average so far. After the cold front passes, at least the first days of September will be cooler. Forecasters will be watching for the risk of cold weather in northern parts reaching further south than our current forecast. At this point it looks like plenty of sunshine will help temperatures reach the low 20s along the 401 corridor and near the 20-degree mark for southern Quebec, which is just two degrees cooler than the season. Beyond that, it looks like warmer weather will return over the Labor Day weekend and continue into next back-to-school week — with temperatures more typical of midsummer than early September. Even cooler weather is expected later in the week and into the weekend. Thumbnail courtesy of Paul Arnold, taken in Hamilton, Ont. Be sure to check back for the latest weather updates for Ontario.
