Outlook for late August: turning up the heat, bringing the storms

A cold front that swept across the prairies last week is traveling across the country on Sunday. The northwestern region of the province will be the first to see the storms, with the possibility of them becoming severe. The pre-dawn disturbance could wake up the region with strong winds, heavy rainfall and the possibility of large hail. Storms will be around northwestern Ontario on Monday, but the situation won’t be unique to the region. A thunderstorm risk extends across the province with southern Ontario banding the risk with another chance of storms becoming severe. Monday is also the hottest day forecast, with widespread 30s across southern Ontario. With the Humidex, unfortunately, it will be closer to the 40 mark for many locations, including the greater Toronto area, ensuring that the warm month will not be forgotten or lost. Weather forecaster Tyler Hamilton commented: “This heat and moisture blowing up ahead of a cold front will naturally make the atmosphere unstable, so we’re watching for the risk of stronger storms sweeping through the area late Monday afternoon. The storms will likely take on heavy line characteristics, meaning we should be on the lookout for some stronger winds associated with the storms.” The cold front will break those high temperatures as it finishes its tour of the province on Tuesday with a stop in eastern Ontario and begins traveling to Quebec. These areas will endure another day of storms with potentially strong storms. Windy and rainy conditions will call the day as August draws to a close.
