According to police, a 14-year-old boy was driving a Toyota 4Runner with a 16-year-old passenger. The driver is believed to have made a sharp left turn while driving on a dirt road in the area of 15th Street NE and 128th Avenue NE shortly before 7 a.m.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle, police said, and it ran off the road before coming to rest on the passenger side. Calgary EMS transported the passenger to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition, but police say he died a short time later. The 14-year-old driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He has since been released from the hospital, but was subsequently arrested on outstanding warrants and remains in custody.

Three other teenagers were at the scene but refused treatment, according to EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux. A CPS spokesperson confirmed there were a total of five teenagers at the scene, including the two who were taken to hospital. Police say charges are pending against the teenage driver in connection with the crash. Speed is considered a possible factor in the crash, but not drugs or alcohol. The investigation is ongoing and police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash.
