Governor of Florida. Ron DeSantis suspended four Broward County school board members after reading a report issued by a grand jury empaneled after the Parkland school shooting.
Pointing to the “incompetence, dereliction of duty and abuse of power” of the board members, DeSantis signed an executive order suspending Patricia Good, Donna Korn, Ann Murray and Laurie Rich Levinson and naming their replacements.
“It is my duty to suspend individuals from office when there is clear evidence of incompetence, dereliction of duty, misconduct or misconduct,” DeSantis said. “The State Grand Jury’s findings vindicate the work of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School Safety Commission. We are grateful to the members of the jury who devoted countless hours to this mission, and we hope this suspension will bring the Parkland community another step forward to justice This action is in the best interest of the residents and students of Broward County and all citizens of Florida.”

The Twentieth State Grand Jury has issued several reports, but its final report, which ran to more than 130 pages, spent considerable time pointing out specific problems fraud and error million dollars of government funds.

“Even four years after the events of February 14, 2018, the Grand Jury’s final report found that a security-related alarm that could have potentially saved lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School “was and is such a low priority that remains. de-installed at several schools,” DeSantis’ office wrote.
In addition to calling the schools “unsafe” environments, grand jury members also criticized board members for allowing education to continue in “aging, dilapidated, moldy buildings that were supposed to have been renovated years ago.”

DeSantis’ office pointed to select, key pieces of the grand jury report to say, “These are inexcusable actions by school board members who have demonstrated a pattern of encouraging unacceptable behavior, including fraud and mismanagement, throughout the district.”
