Liverpool equaled their biggest win in Premier League history as Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz both grabbed the points in a 9-0 thrashing of promoted Bournemouth. Jurgen Klopp’s men came just short of last season’s title and made a slow start to the new campaign, with surprise draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace compounded by Monday’s defeat by Manchester United. Scott Parker warned of a backlash and his Bournemouth side could do nothing to prevent a humiliation at Anfield as Liverpool recorded their first Premier League win of the season in record fashion. The Cherries join Southampton and Ipswich in losing 9-0 in the competition. Firmino, starting in place of summer signing Darwin Nunez, produced a stunning display in the first half, which began with Diaz heading home his cross within three minutes of the opening. Firmino then provided the assist for Harvey Elliott’s first Premier League goal – an incredible long-range strike that would have been goal of the day but for the impressive Trent Alexander-Arnold that followed. The Brazilian forward scored that goal and celebrated one of his own soon after when he turned in a misplaced cross – his first league goal at Anfield since December 2020. Vigil van Dijk hit home Liverpool’s fifth on the stroke of half-time, with Chris Mepham’s own goal giving the Cherries a major blow at the start of the second half. Firmino grabbed a second of the afternoon before departing to applause. The goals didn’t stop there though, as Fabio Carvalho scored his first for the club and Diaz his second, but calls for a 10th went unanswered.
