On Thursday afternoon, the White House Twitter account fired up the Georgia Republican after she criticized the White House’s announcement to forgive up to $10,000 in student loans and $20,000 in debt for Pell Grant recipients, noting that she had repaid its government loans. The Payroll Protection Program was put in place during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of a series of legislation signed by former President Donald Trump aimed at ensuring businesses keep employees on the payroll. The White House tweeted Thursday night that Ms. Green had $183,504 in loans. Ms. Greene responded that the president’s actions were unfair, as they would force hard workers to pay for the loans of people who racked up debt at Ivy League universities. This is despite the fact that the president’s initiative only applies to people making less than $125,000 a year. In addition, the White House also criticized Republicans such as Reps. Kevin Hern and Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and Vern Buchanan of Florida for consolidating PPP loans totaling $1 million. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Mr. Biden doubled down without specifically naming Ms. Green but appearing to refer to her often outlandish beliefs. “I found it absolutely fascinating that some of the people talking about big spending are the same people who got $158,000 in PPP money, including her name, this woman who believes — anyway,” he said. “A lot of Republicans got a lot of money. The very people who criticize it.” This week Ms Green retweeted claims that mask use causes lung cancer, brain damage and Covid. He has been an enthusiastic repeater of Donald Trump’s campaign lies, flirted with QAnon conspiracy theories, and suggested that the 2018 California wildfires were caused by a giant space laser owned by a prominent Jewish family. Many Republicans criticized student loan forgiveness, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling it “student loan socialism.”
