One of the women, Rani Banerjee, posted a five-minute video of the incident on Facebook and it quickly went viral on social media. One of the women recording was on the phone with 911 throughout the exchange. “It’s a white female wearing a black dress,” the woman told 911. “No, I’m not white,” Upton said in the video. “I’m Mexican! I’m Mexican, and I paid my king here!” “We didn’t even talk to you. Why did you come to us to talk?” said a woman. “Because I hate you with the Indian kings, that’s why!” Upton seems to say. “You guys come to our country.” It is unclear what started the incident and whether it started inside a business. This is not shown in the posted video. Upton was arrested Thursday on charges of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor terroristic threats. Police say they are investigating it as a hate crime. But at one point Upton was heard trying to apologize. “You know what. You’re right. Ma’am, I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” he said. “You know what, peace. Okay, f**k you! Peace. I overstepped my bounds.” The woman who recorded the video told the 911 operator that they did not feel safe. That’s when Upton started talking about women’s bodies. “I’m not going to hurt you,” Upton said. “Look at me. I’m 100 pounds. You weigh well over 200.” Less than two minutes later, an officer arrived and separated Upton from the group of women. The DFW chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations responded with a statement saying, “The level of vitriol and the alleged physical attack against four Indian-American women in Plano is truly appalling. This type of hate has no place in North Texas and we call out the law enforcement to investigate this incident as a hate crime.” Plano police say more charges could be filed against Upton. Her bond is set at $10,000. FOX 4 reached out to some of the women for comment, but has not heard back The Facebook post also said due to the investigation they have been advised not to comment at this time.
