Kevin Enciso was driving his pregnant wife Sabrina, 32, to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida on doctor’s orders because she was in pain from a car accident the day before.
But as they approached the hospital in 100F heat on July 28, they found two Miami-Dade police cars blocking the parking lot entrance as officers spoke.
Father-to-be Kevin, 28, decided to honk his horn at the deputies in a bid to get his wife inside. One officer quickly moved off the road while the other decided to conduct a traffic stop.
And despite being just a few hundred meters from the hospital entrance and in the midst of a medical emergency, the pair were questioned by the officer for 20 minutes – who allayed Sabrina’s concerns as she was still ‘breathing’.
Only after first responders caught Sabrina’s tearful blood pressure, which was “exploding,” did officers let her through and into the emergency room.
Sabrina told DailyMail.com that at the time, she was just seven weeks pregnant and had miscarried just last year – hence her panic and urgency when she was rushed to hospital.
After spending many hours in the ER after the ordeal, she found out that she was thankfully still pregnant and in fact expecting twins.
Kevin and Sabrina Enciso were on their way to the emergency room in Florida when they were pulled over by a Miami-Dade police officer after blocking the hospital’s entrance. Sabrina is pregnant and at the time she was suffering from pain from an accident that happened the day before
Officer Daniels pulled the couple over when Kevin honked at him for blocking the hospital entrance
Daniels ignored the couple’s plea to let them go to the hospital which was only a few meters away, despite the fact that Sabrina said she could miscarry. Instead, he proceeded to stop traffic
Daniels led Kevin out of the car despite insisting his wife was having a medical emergency
The footage showed the moment the pair were pulled over by Daniels at the stop sign just outside the hospital. Kevin tried to move around the officer who had been stopped at the traffic light for several seconds
Speaking about the ordeal, the mum-to-be told DailyMail.com: ‘We had a miscarriage last year, so the fear of it happening again all over again was very scary.
“I was about six or seven weeks [pregnant] – the time when anything can happen. I was really red and upset, I was crying at that point.
“We were shocked that someone would take advantage of this moment and I don’t know if the officer was having a bad day, but we were completely careless.
“We must hold him fully accountable.”
CCTV footage shows Kevin’s vehicle approaching and stopping behind one of the police cars – before a second officer made a left turn and stopped – blocking both lanes towards the hospital.
After waiting almost 20 seconds behind the officers, Kevin honked his horn to alert them to his presence – but was then pulled over himself.
Recording the ordeal, Kevin was heard asking the officer: “What are you pulling for me?” but Officer Daniels just replied, “Sir, give me your permission.”
The dad-to-be, who refused to hand over his license because he had not ‘committed a crime’, said: ‘I honked your horn very nicely – once – to get out of the way.
Kevin pleaded with the officers to allow his wife to go to the hospital, but Daniels insisted on proving that his wife was in a hospital and in pain
The couple revealed they had miscarried a child last year – hence their urgency when they rushed to the emergency room. Luckily, after the ordeal with the cops, they found out they were expecting twins
“I have an emergency, so I’m in the ER for my wife.”
Sabrina later added, “I think I’m going to miscarry.”
After the fight with the officer, Kevin got out of the car while Sabrina followed.
“Oh so are you okay now?” Officer Daniels said to Sabrina.
“I had an accident,” she replied. ‘I am in a lot of pain.’
The officer walked over to Sabrina to insist that she sit down while he called the Fire and Rescue Service, despite the fact that the hospital was only a few meters away.
“He’s awake, he’s breathing,” Daniels can be heard saying.
Minutes passed while the officer called for help and Sabrina began to breathe heavily. Kevin continued to refuse to hand over his license while the officer asked again what had happened to his wife.
To which Sabrina replied: “I think I’m about to miscarry. I’m coming to the ER today because that’s what my doctor told me to do, to make sure I don’t lose this child.’
Daniels called Fire and Rescue to help Sabrina, even though the hospital was only a few feet away.
Speaking about the ordeal, the mum-to-be told DailyMail.com: ‘We had a miscarriage last year so the fear of it happening again was really scary.’
After Daniels prevented the couple from going to the emergency room directly behind them, they were finally allowed to leave a few minutes later
Only after first responders took Sabrina’s blood pressure, which was “explosive,” did officers let her through and into the emergency room
Officer Daniels continued to question the mother-to-be, who works at the hospital as a financial analyst, about the accident while insisting on seeing the police report as evidence.
“We will have the Fire and Rescue Service come and treat you right now. They’re going to look at you and take your vitals and everything from the accident you had yesterday,” the officer said.
Daniels and Kevin continued to fight outside the car while another officer got out of his car to wait for help.
After Fire & Rescue showed up and took the pregnant woman’s vitals, Officer Daniels gave the couple permission to go to the emergency room, but warned Kevin never to honk at a police officer.
The couple proceeded to the waiting room and stayed for hours at the hospital.
The video sparked outrage on social media, with viewers in disbelief and calling Daniels “irresponsible”.
“Imagine a citizen blocking access to an ER and creating problems with those trying to seek medical help,” said one social media user.
Another added dismissively: “It’s a good thing we have the police protecting and serving themselves.”
Others insisted that the officer be held responsible.
“The cops should be charged and they should pay the cost of the emergency response team he called. This is a dirty cop who should be fired and charged with harassment.”
A complaint was filed with the Miami-Dade Police Department alleging the couple’s civil rights were violated, according to WSVN.
