A cougar was spotted near a school in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, according to a Facebook post by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The cougar was seen near the JKL Bahweting Anishnabe School at 1301 Marquette Ave., near the reservation. “The Law Enforcement of the Sault Tribe [STLE] has increased patrols in the area and has blocked off the path and is recommending that people stay away from the school path area,” the Facebook post said. Below is the rest of the post: To report a cougar sighting, contact STLE at 906-635-6065. STLE asks residents to: • Be aware of their surroundings, not stay outdoors at night when muggles are most active. • Keep their pets indoors or in an enclosed outdoor kennel, especially at night. • Use their exterior lighting at night. If you encounter a cougar: • Confront the animal and do not be submissive. Stand tall, wave your arms and speak loudly. • Never run from a cougar or other large carnivore. If there are children, pick them up so they can’t run. • If attacked, fight back with whatever is available. Do NOT play dead.
