99 budgies were surrendered to the SPCA from a home in West Kelowna.
The BC SPCA says it has nearly 100 parakeets in its possession after an animal welfare investigation in West Kelowna.
“The keeper was unable to properly care for such a large number of birds, resulting in many health and hygiene issues,” says Eileen Drever, senior conservation and stakeholder relations officer for the BC SPCA.
Drever says SPCA officers provided food, fans and other support “while they worked with the person to deliver the birds so they could get the ongoing care they needed.”
In total, 99 budgies were taken to the SPCA in Kelowna on August 24, but some will be transferred to other shelters.
The SPCA news release did not disclose where exactly in West Kelowna the birds were rescued from, but a source told Castanet they were from an address on Butt Road.
Drever added that care orders had been issued for some remaining birds at the home and said officers would be monitoring next week.
“If we are not satisfied that the required changes have been made, we will take more animals into our care.”
“Due to the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the province, we will quarantine the birds for 30 days,” says Drever. “Once the quarantine period is over, we will look for homes for everyone.”
