Sony announced it will increase the cost of the PlayStation 5 – in response to “high inflation rates worldwide, as well as adverse currency trends” – earlier today, with the price increase affecting most markets worldwide, with immediate effect .
This increase affects both disc-less and disc-less models of the PS5 and is equivalent to £30 in the UK and €50 in Europe – with similar issues appearing in Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada , but not in the US for now.
Breaking news: Sony raises PS5 price.
Responding to requests for comment following today’s PS5 news, Microsoft shared its own statement with Eurogamer, saying, “We’re constantly evaluating our business to provide our fans with great gaming options.”
He also noted that, despite Sony’s price increase, “Xbox Series S’s suggested retail price remains from £249.99 and Xbox Series X is from £449.99.”
That, of course, doesn’t rule out Microsoft following Sony’s lead in the future, but as industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls wrote earlier today, it seems likely that Microsoft will first want to “take advantage of Sony’s surge to to drive its value message, specifically for the Xbox Series S, Game Pass and All Access offering as we head into the holiday shopping season” before making similar pricing moves.
