Dr. Albert de Villiers Former top Internal Health doctor faces new child sex crimes in Alberta. Dr. Albert Stefanus de Villiers, who served as IH’s chief medical officer until his first arrest in June 2021, was charged Tuesday by the RCMP with solicitation of sexual intercourse, making sexual material available to a child and voyeurism. The crimes allegedly occurred between January 2017 and December 2019 in Alberta. He was originally charged in June 2021 with sexual assault and sexual interference for allegations involving a child between 2018 and 2020. Police say the new allegations surfaced in January 2022 when someone filed an additional report of sexual offenses involving a child. The Grande Prairie Special Investigations Unit handled the second investigation with assistance from the Olds RCMP. de Villiers is scheduled to stand trial on the original charges Jan. 10-12 in Grande Prairie. The Kelowna resident was released on bail with multiple conditions, including no contact with anyone under the age of 16, and will next appear in Grande Prairie District Court on the new charges on Sept. 12. De Villiers was the senior medical officer of health for Alberta’s northern zone before moving to Kelowna for the position of chief medical officer of Interior Health in August 2020. Before his arrest, de Villiers was IH’s go-to person for communicating COVID-19 pandemic information to the public.
