The 18ft long python was spotted on top of the gutter of a house in Chandler’s Ford in the early hours of Tuesday (August 23) by a resident who lives across the road. Then, to the residents’ horror, the reptile managed to get through the property’s bedroom window. A neighbor then contacted the owner who lives a few doors away and came to pick it up, locals said. The python was spotted on the roof of a house in Chandlers Ford Neighbour, Jenny Warwick told ITV Meridian she was “shocked” to see the snake on top of the roof. “Well, I was quite shocked.” Jenny said. “I called my husband and told him there was a snake on the loose and he told me I was crazy. “But then he looked and was like, ‘oh my god!’” We were just watching it, it was just crazy. “I was just worried about going down and eating something… I don’t know why they’re big.” Jenny Warwick tells ITV Meridian the situation was “just crazy”. The RSPCA confirmed it was aware of the incident at Chandlers Ford. Scientist Evie Button said: “Snakes are excellent escape artists and will take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure door or a loose lid to make a break for it. “Last year, we received more than 1,200 reports of snakes, with the highest number of calls coming in during the summer months. “Snakes become more active during the heat. So we would urge all pet snake owners to be extra vigilant at this time of year, invest in a species-appropriate enclosure and make sure the enclosure is maintained secure – and locked if necessary – when unattended. “The RSPCA urges prospective owners of reptiles such as snakes to thoroughly research the needs of the particular species and what is required to care for the animal, using specialist sources. “People should only consider keeping a snake if they can ensure that it is fully capable of meeting these needs.”
