A New York Democratic Senate candidate backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., celebrated her primary victory by declaring “socialism wins”. Kristen Gonzalez, a tech worker whose campaign for the New York state Senate has been backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and left-leaning lawmakers including Ocasio-Cortez, made the statement to cheering supporters on Tuesday after her victory in the primaries. “I know we’re saving the speeches for later, but today we really proved that socialism wins!” Gonzalez said as her supporters cheered. WASHINGTON’S SOCIALIST DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS IS CALLING FOR VACANT HOUSES “We’re not going anywhere and we won’t stop until we see a socialist slab in this town!” she continued. Gonzalez is running on a far-left, socialist platform that promises to “cancel student debt,” “free health care,” “aggressive climate action” to “build a Green New York,” “Goodwill Rent Protection” that make it harder for landlords to evict tenants “and make sure our neighborhoods remain hard-working and diverse.” “We must tax the wealthy to finally invest in public housing and build hundreds of thousands of new, affordable, green homes to solve the housing crisis and begin building a Green New York for all,” Gonzalez’s campaign website states . Gonzalez, who was part of the last class of Obama administration interns and is a former staffer for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., also runs on a “queer liberation” platform. “The trans and queer right are under attack, with our black and brown brothers disproportionately affected. These attacks are overwhelmingly focused on youth and schools, but are only the beginning of a larger assault on queer identities and bodily autonomy,” the “Queer” of the socialist candidate. Liberation Platform” it says. New York State Senate Democratic Socialist candidate Kristen Gonzalez is endorsed by Rep. Gonzalez’s victory in Tuesday’s primary election makes her the latest socialist candidate to advance in the Democratic primary. Socialist candidates have become more prominent on the left since the rise of Ocasio-Cortez and the “Squad,” and are showing up more in deep blue areas like New York and Austin, Texas. In May, former Austin City Councilman Greg Cazar beat Texas state Rep. Eddie Rodriguez for the Democratic nomination in the 35th District in one of the Lone Star State’s many closely watched primaries. Getting married, who calls himself a democratic socialist, is running for a seat that covers parts of both Austin and San Antonio. Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett previously represented the district. Doggett was elected to run in the new 37th District in Texas, leaving his old seat open in a heavily Democratic district. Casar’s primary victory means he is likely to win the general election and become the next socialist to head to Capitol Hill in Washington. They couldn’t ignore us,” Parson said in an ad in May. Gonzales, a political newcomerdefeated Democratic challenger Elizabeth Crowley — who is a cousin of former Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y.
