Six days later, on May 6, a 30-year-old man died of his injuries after an accident at a bull festival in Portaje, Caceres, western Spain.

Ten deaths from bullfighting this year

Earlier this month, another bullfighting festival in Valencia was canceled after two children were allowed to light an animal’s horns, in breach of rules banning the participation of minors. Torture is Not Culture, an animal rights group, said the latest death at a bullfight brought the number of deaths in these activities to ten so far this year. “The regulations of popular bullfighting celebrations refer to public safety, respect for property and the prohibition of animal cruelty. However, the necessary means to implement it are rarely put in place,” said José P. Cubells, of Torture is Not Culture. In 2013, the then-conservative government declared bullfighting part of national heritage that should be protected throughout Spain, effectively blocking any attempt to ban the practice.
