According to police, there were 12 incidents in which Asians received phone calls where scammers posed as employees of courier companies or law enforcement agencies.

They say the messages claim the victim was under investigation for involvement in a fraud scheme. Trending Stories

The scammers then demand financial compensation to keep the matter from escalating. “This is a scam,” police warned in a statement. “Law enforcement agencies will not demand payment from you.”

Story continues below ad Police also warned residents not to send money, follow instructions from automated Mandarin-speaking callers or provide personal information over the phone. They also said they are wary when someone asks for money to be transferred to bank accounts in China or Hong Kong.
